Joy Munshower
"Surf and Turf"
May 22 - 26, 2023 (5-day workshop)

This workshop is for intermediate and advanced students. Students will be sculpting bas-relief sealife and "turf" animal beads. This 5-day class offers a bit of everything I teach. Animals taught in this class will be catered to the preferences of the students taking the class. The emphasis will be different techniques to create lifelike creatures and their numerous textures. Students will learn how to break down the shapes of the animals and how to apply those shapes to sculpting in a bas-relief or low-relief style on a base bead. An overview of various animal anatomies will be covered to help the student create realistic and lifelike low-relief animal and sea-life beads. Students will also learn how to use specialty sculpting tools to facilitate and ease sculpting in a low-relief, as well as 3-D style. Some photo and diagram reference will be provided to the students to better illustrate shape, anatomy and composition breakdown.

This class meets from 9am to 5pm each day, Monday through Friday, with additional studio time Monday through Thursday, from 5pm to 9pm. Materials for participating in the course are included. If you have specific colors you are interested in working with please bring them with you.

Joy graduated from San Jose State University with a degree in Design with an emphasis in Ceramic Studio Practices. After college, she lived in Germany for a few years, explored most of central Europe, and then returned to graduate studies at California State University Fresno for Sculpture & Bronze Casting. She has since spent the last 20 years as a professional sculptor specializing in cast bronze, ceramic sculpture and now flame-worked glass.

Joy spent most of her twenties as a professional sculptor selling her bronze wildlife sculptures nationwide through The Nature Company, Natural Wonders and Nature Crafts.

For more than 20 years Joy also worked in the construction and interior design industry specializing in tile and stone.

In 2011 Joy took her first flameworking class and was hooked! Since that first class, Joy has devoted all of her time and energy to her glass creations and teaching her techniques around the world.
